Risk Management with Eco-Fish

Risk Management - have you got it sorted?

Eco-Fish is rapidly becoming the tool of choice for people wanting to explore and develop their skills and enterprising capability in Risk management.

Following some research we at Innovative Enterprise carried out with RSVP Design in Redcar & Cleveland with the Enterprise Team, we have found the sustainable fishing toolkit is brilliant for learning about managed risk-taking.

Of the BIG 13 Enterprise Capabilities identified by ‘Rotherham Ready’, Risk Management (the attitude to, measurement of and behaviours around risk-taking) is often the one most difficult to explore and understand and is therefore often least understood by students.

After using the Eco-Fish structured learning tool, 92% of the year 9 students involved with the game stated that they had a much better idea of the skills required to take risks more effectively - compared to 52% of the group that had not even heard of risk management before the workshop!

Through workshop activity and the activities involved in playing the Eco-Fish game, players have to be involved in risk-taking behaviours as part of a team (or country) who are trying to balance their need for food against the need to protect and preserve the fish in the shared ocean.

As individuals 75% of students involved felt they were ‘good risk takers’ as a result of the activity in the game and of these, 20% had also improved their risk taking through the risks they had taken part of in the game itself.

Eco-Fish can be played in an hour with minimal supervision and teacher preparation, with students working together to try and reach a mutually satisfactory and sustainable fishing solution.

Along the way as the game progresses, people assess risks, negotiate, compromise, engage in politics, economics, business, geography and find out more about the food on their plates.
